Portable Appliance Testing

What is PAT Testing?

Portable Appliance Testing is the procedure to maintain electrical appliances to prevent danger as far as is reasonably practical. All electrical appliances should be inspected and tested in accordance with the IEE Code of Practice.

Why have PAT Testing carried out?

If you run a business you are legally required to ensure the safety of your employees, customers and members of the public. PAT Testing is a recognised method of ensuring electrical appliances and equipment are safe to use. Certification also serves to demonstrate due diligence and your concern for the safety of your staff and others. Many Insurance policies now require PAT Testing to be carried out as a minimum requirement.

How often should I have PAT Testing carried out?

The frequency of testing an appliance is dependant on numerous factors:

  1. Type of equipment
  2. Style of use
  3. Age of the equipment
  4. Environment of usage
  5. Competence of personnel using the equipment
  6. Results of previous PAT tests
  7. Manufacturer's recommendations

The IEE provide a 'Suggested Frequency of Inspection and Testing of Equipment' table on their website and you can visit it by clicking here.
